BRENNAN LEIGH
Brennen Leigh is an American songwriter, guitarist, mandolinist and singer, known for his direct storytelling style which has elevated him to cult icon status in Europe, Scandinavia, the USA and South America. Her songs have been recorded by artists such as Lee Ann Womack, Rodney Crowell, Sunny Sweeney, Charley Crockett and many more. She is as well known for her music as for her songwriting, and it is easy to understand how Leigh caught the attention of greats such as Guy Clark, who colorfully said of her flatpicking style: "Brennen Leigh plays guitar like a motherfucker", David Olney describes the songwriting her as "tender, violent, sentimental, foolish and wise, she is always Brennen. Confident and at ease with herself, without being a jerk about it"
Steeped in fiddle, wailing steel guitar, a sprinkling of heavenly choral vocals and anchored in her warm, expressive voice, Brennen Leigh's newest album is an emotional revelation. Rooted in vintage country , Ain't Through Honky Tonkin' Yet is an unadorned, beer- and tear-dropped tribute to a time when tough country ballads poured out of AM transistor radios.
The album's country roots run deep, with guests such as Marty Stuart and Rodney Crowell and a number of first-class musicians, but each song rises with a freedom that dresses the expression. With thoughtful, sharp lyrics and lively melodies at the center, Leigh has managed to create a modern gem, while at the same time paying tribute to country music's enduring golden age.
